An eclectic line-up of alternative orchestras, large bands & ensembles is coming to Edinburgh’s Hidden Door festival on bank holiday Sunday 24th May. The night will also feature a range of experimental new orchestral projects and collaborations in the festival’s currently derelict “Secret Courtyard” venue in the Grassmarket – once upon a time the city’s old lighting depot. Main acts will run here from 6-11pm and continue later from 11-3am at the Bongo Club as part of Bongo Lives festival.
Sunday 24th May 2015, 6pm – 3am.
Secret Courtyard, 6pm – 11pm, £12/£10 advance
Bongo Lives, 10pm – 3am, £7/£5 advance
Secret Courtyard + Bongo Lives, 6pm-3am, £15/£13 advance
Tinderbox’s “Alternative Orchestra Night” will kick off with Edinburgh’s new 20-piece band Mantra, who will perform original music for film, screen and other media, as well as collaborating with animators & film-makers to create a unique and immersive audio-visual experience.
Upstairs in “The Cage Room” – a long-forgotten, low ceilinged room divided up by bizarre chicken coop-like fencing – bands will perform bespoke, raw and intimate shows from within the cages to small audiences just the other side of the fence! Inside the cages, you’ll find up-and-coming bands Urvanovic – ‘a seven-piece variety bucket of strings, synths, percussion and other noises’; Victorian Trout Conspiracy – a foot-stomping ‘mix of ska and dirty-urban-ghetto-funk’ (Buzzmag); and the unstoppable blues & roots of The Black Diamond Express – “a nine-piece soaked in poetry, myth and bourbon… somehow staying true to both Robert Johnson and The Sex Pistols.” (The List).
In the main room downstairs, a new one-off orchestral experiment “The Spontaneous Orchestra” will bring together a full orchestra for an entirely improvised performance blending conductor Mike Kearney’s amazing ‘Suggesture’ system of improvisation using hand-signals, a system of live-composition using overhead projectors and imagery for the orchestra to respond to, and some new ideas Tinderbox are putting together with game developers for how an audience might interact with an orchestra too!
The finale at The Secret Courtyard venue will see all bands and musicians come together with Edinburgh’s groundbreaking contemporary youth orchestra, the Tinderbox Orchestra (“A Spectacular Modern Band” **** The Guardian; “Formidable” **** The Scotsman; “A Musical tour de force” **** The List). The final set will feature full orchestral collaborations with bands Urvanovic, Victorian Trout Conspiracy & Black Diamond Express, plus new compositions, fire-fuelled performances and Tinderbox’s trademark fusion of instruments & styles.
The Alternative Orchestra Afterparty will keep the night going from 10pm – 3am at the Bongo Clubas part of Bongo Lives festival, featuring full sets from Victorian Trout Conspiracy, Black Diamond Express, plus other acts (tbc) and DJ Nikki Kent to keep us dancing until late.
Surrounding all of this will be Hidden Door’s extensive gathering of visual arts installations, theatre shows & independent cinema programme. More info on the Hidden Door website.
