Fiercely independent and led by some of Scotland’s most talented young musicians across genres, Tinderbox Orchestra have produced a variety of award-winning & experimental productions, gathered an international cast of professional collaborators, and transformed preconceptions of what an orchestra can be. Bringing together rappers & singers with soaring strings, heavy brass, delicate woodwind and a thundering back-line, they are a mesmerising sound and unforgettable live show.
Tinderbox Orchestra have just completed a sold-out run of shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019 and released their latest single “Talking About Birds” with award-winning Chinese artist Song Yuzhe (German Record Critics Award).
Their debut album “Tinderbox” (2017) received four-star reviews, and singles received spot plays on BBC Radio 6 Music (Tom Robinson) and on BBC Radio Scotland (Vic Galloway, Janis Forsyth). The album was accompanied by a live show that hit the festival circuit, headlining the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude and the closing night of Hidden Door festival. The orchestra has also performed at major cultural venues including Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, Queens Hall and Leith Theatre, and collaborated for special live shows with acclaimed artists such as Kathryn Joseph and My Brightest Diamond.

We run several orchestra courses for all levels of experience, from beginners through to top young professionals, and open to people aged 11 – 25. These are fun and creative projects with a focus on writing and performing original music, playing modern and contemporary styles that are meaningful to the people involved, and taking on interesting collaborations with bands and other artists.
Members of the orchestra have a big say in the music they play and what they want to do with the bands. You can get involved in different areas, from rehearsing and playing in concerts to writing and arranging music, conducting and organising events.
