Zoom Orchestra + Live Electronics

Playing music together in real time online is sadly not possible in any normal kind of way due to internet latency, but we have been trying some ways to improvise and play together live nonetheless!

For this experiment, we got together with sound artist Yann Seznec, who designed an electronics ‘patch’ using a program called Pure Data.

When the musicians play through the Zoom call, the audio feeds into this electronics patch on Yann’s computer, and he can  distort or add a range of effects to it, and manipulate these effects in real time.

The distorted audio is then fed back into zoom for the musicians to hear and respond to, so they can improvise with Yann in real time!

Here are a few clips from exploring and developing this idea, and some weird and wonderful soundscapes that come from it!

Recently members of the band have been getting together again to join Yann again on his “Makin’ Stuff with Yann” sessions in partnership with MICA.

We’re experimenting with Yann’s tech to explore more ways of making sound together.
