Games & Festivals: A Conversation with David Martin from Hidden Door

David Martin is an artist, educator and founder/creative director of Hidden Door Festival in Edinburgh.
In 2009 David started a project called Hidden Door with the aim of supporting local musicians and recent art graduates by bringing art and music together in creative events. This grew into a multi arts festival that set out to create opportunities for emerging artists and innovative projects, creating unique experiences for audiences by temporarily transforming disused and abandoned spaces in Edinburgh for the annual festival. The volunteer-run festival is built on a DIY approach that maximises inclusion and community engagement, and has won plaudits for its creative use of spaces and bringing places back to life, in particular the magnificent Leith Theatre, which had been abandoned and derelict for 25 years, and now after Hidden Door’s work there, is used as part of the International Festival and other highly significant cultural events.

Hidden Door continues to adapt creatively, running a regular online “live show” during the pandemic, continuing to create opportunities for creative practitioners to develop new projects, and is looking to deliver an innovative live festival in 2021.

David continues to make art and leads the Foundation Course at the Leith School of Art.
